Do climate controlled storage units have outlets?
Last updated October 2026
Not by default. Climate control and electricity are separate features, so a climate controlled unit often has no outlet inside it.
Climate control means the building’s heating and cooling keep the temperature in a set range. CubeSmart says it aims to keep its climate controlled buildings between 55 and 80 degrees, and notes they are not humidity controlled. That equipment runs on the building’s power, not on an outlet in your unit.
Extra Space says it plainly on its page about units with electricity: climate control “does not mean the storage unit has an electrical outlet.” It tells renters who need power to look for a unit that lists an outlet as an amenity.
Public Storage’s size guide treats them the same way. It lists climate control and electric outlets as two different unit features and says only some units have outlets.
Our own data points the same way. Of the 349 facilities on this site that say they have outlets inside units, only 10 mention climate control in the line we quoted from their website.
If you need both, ask the facility three things:
- Does this climate controlled unit have its own outlet, inside the unit and not in the hallway?
- How many amps is the circuit, and how is power billed?
- Can the outlet be written into my lease for this unit?
Expect fewer choices when you need both features, and be ready to wait for the right unit to open up.
