What is a storage unit with electrical access called?
Last updated October 2026
There’s no single industry name. Most facilities call it a “storage unit with electricity” or say the unit has “electrical access” or an “electric outlet.” Knowing the other names helps when you search or call.
Here are the terms we’ve seen facilities use:
- Storage units with electricity, units with power, electrical access. Extra Space uses all three, and files the page under business storage.
- Workshop or commercial flex units. 10 Federal Storage says some facilities offer units with these names, built with electricity.
- Flex space. Inside Self Storage, an industry trade publication, describes flex space as units for more than storage, which “typically” include electricity, Wi-Fi, and climate control.
- Business or commercial storage. StorageMart discusses outlets in its business storage FAQ.
- Powered storage units. SpareFoot, a storage marketplace, uses this term.
For RVs and boats, the words change. A parking space with power may be called a “hookup,” “shore power,” or a “30 amp” or “50 amp” space. See what the hookups at RV storage are called.
The label matters less than the details. A “flex” unit at one facility may be a plain unit with one outlet, while a “unit with electricity” elsewhere may have its own meter. When you call, skip the jargon and ask whether the specific unit has an outlet inside it, how many amps it carries, and how power is billed.
